Traumatic Brain Injury

Specialist centre for the rehabilitation of patients with traumatic brain injury in Marbella

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) shows a characteristic epidemiological pattern with two main patient groups. On the one hand, there are younger adults, in whom TBI is often caused by road traffic accidents, sporting activities or high-energy trauma. On the other hand, there is a second group made up of older adults, in whom the main cause is falls, often associated with factors such as frailty, balance disorders or comorbidities. This bimodal pattern reflects not only differences in the cause of the injury, but also in the clinical and rehabilitation needs of each group.

Consequences of TBI

The consequences of TBI are heterogeneous and may affect multiple domains. At a physical level, mobility problems are common, including weakness, balance difficulties and gait disorders. At a cognitive level, deficits in attention, memory and executive functions may appear. At a behavioural and emotional level, personality changes, impulsivity and affective disorders are also common. These sequelae have a direct impact on the patient’s independence and participation in everyday life. In this regard, we provide close treatment and follow-up through neuropsychology and rehabilitation medicine in order to minimise the long-term cognitive and behavioural impact on our patients. For this reason, early multimodal rehabilitation is essential, as it allows us to make the most of neuroplasticity mechanisms, reduce secondary complications and accelerate functional recovery.

Our approach to TBI rehabilitation

Every traumatic brain injury is unique. Our model of care is adapted to the specific consequences affecting each patient in order to maximise functional recovery.

Initial neuropsychological assessment

Intensive cognitive rehabilitation

Behavioural and emotional intervention

High-intensity therapy

Active family involvement

Long-term follow-up

Specialised Functional Units

Each area, one shared goal: to support the patient with TBI towards the greatest possible recovery.

Rehabilitation Medicine

We supervise the rehabilitation process as a whole, from pharmacological management and interventional therapies for spasticity control to coordination between all areas of the team.

Neuropsychology

We assess and treat the cognitive and behavioural disturbances resulting from brain injury: attention, memory, executive functions, impulsivity and emotional regulation. The goal is for the patient to regain their life.

Physiotherapy

We work on motor recovery, balance and gait retraining, adapting each session to the patient’s functional needs and the stage of recovery they are in.

Occupational Therapy

We support the patient in regaining independence by working on activities of daily living, so that they can function again in their usual environment with the greatest possible autonomy.

Speech and Language Therapy

We treat disorders of language, communication and swallowing resulting from acquired brain injury. Regaining the ability to speak and eat normally is an essential part of the rehabilitation process.

Every TBI is different. Every person is too.

The impact of a traumatic brain injury is not measured only by the injury itself, but by everything the patient and their family must relearn afterwards. At Neralis Rehab, we support that process from day one, with a specialist team, treatments tailored to each case, and one clear goal: to help the patient return to their life.
