Spinal Cord Injury

Specialist centre for the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury in Marbella

Spinal cord injury shows great variability in its clinical presentation depending on the level and extent of the damage, with medical conditions ranging from tetraparesis or paraparesis to complete or incomplete injuries. The areas most commonly affected include motor control and sensation, as well as autonomic dysfunctions such as urinary incontinence. These impairments have a direct impact on daily living activities and on the patient’s social participation.

What rehabilitation should be like

Rehabilitation must be individualised according to the type of injury and the functions that remain preserved. It may include gait re-education, muscle strengthening, the use of orthoses and assistive devices, wheelchair skills training, and optimisation of postural and functional control. Evidence highlights that intensive, task-specific gait training is key to improving speed, endurance and gait quality, particularly in incomplete injuries. In addition, pharmacological management of spasticity, training in basic activities of daily living, and psychological intervention to address the emotional impact of the injury are all essential. Neurological rehabilitation, based on the principles of repetition and specificity, is fundamental in maximising functional recovery and promoting the greatest possible independence for the patient. It is a key process from the earliest stages in order to optimise long-term outcomes.

Our approach to spinal cord injury rehabilitation

The level and extent of the injury determine each programme. We design an individualised plan based on the patient’s preserved abilities in order to maximise functionality and independence.

Initial functional and sensorimotor assessment

Gait re-education and locomotor pattern training

Spasticity management and autonomic function control

Training with orthoses and assistive devices

Independence and effective wheelchair use

Ongoing monitoring and programme adaptation

Functional Units

Each speciality is focused on the same goal: helping the patient with spinal cord injury regain as much control as possible over their body and their life.

Rehabilitation Medicine

We lead the programme as a whole: we adjust pharmacological treatment for spasticity, indicate interventional therapies when necessary, and coordinate all the professionals involved in the patient’s recovery from spinal cord injury.

Neuropsychology

Coping with a spinal cord injury involves a deeply demanding process of personal and family adaptation. We provide specialist psychological support throughout that process, working on acceptance, adjustment to functional loss, and the emotional wellbeing of both the patient and those closest to them.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is the central pillar of spinal cord injury rehabilitation. We work on the recovery and strengthening of preserved muscle groups, gait re-education, balance and postural control, adapting both intensity and goals to the level of injury and the patient’s clinical progress at every stage.

Occupational Therapy

Our occupational therapist works on function in the patient’s real-life environment: wheelchair use, the correct use of orthoses and assistive products, home adaptations, and training in self-care activities. The aim is for the patient to manage as independently as possible outside the clinic.

The goal is not only to recover movement. It is to recover the ability to decide how you want to live.

The loss of mobility, sensation or control over basic functions radically changes the life of the person affected and of those around them. At Neralis Rehab, we support that recovery process with a programme tailored to the level of injury, the preserved abilities and the real goals of each patient. From the very first day, with the team and the intensity that each case requires.
